Dimmed faces flicker on new Fossil Gen5 watch

I recently got the new Fossil Carlyle (Gen5) and was very easily able to pair it up with WatchMaker again on my Pixel 3 - all my faces etc remained fine and working which I had used on my faithful LG Urbane. Was very happy.

Then a week before last my Pixel 3 died and while I waited for Google to do their thing I switched to my dual-sim Moto G7 work phone, and got it all working again (had to start again with WatchMaker though having lost all the data).

Now I have my new Pixel 3 and it's been restored as best that Android allows. I paired up the watch again and got WatchMaker running again from scratch (no data). Unfortunately I can't use any of the WatchMaker faces I know I was using on the temporary Moto G7, nor any others I have randomly tried - when the face dims, it does so for a few seconds and then brightens back up and starts to flicker. It's very irritating.

Any ideas if this can be fixed or is it some new kind of bug?

I got this as well on my 2 day old Fossil Carlyle (Gen5), but it happens in the default watch faces as well, so it isn't a watchmaker-specific bug.

Restarting the watch cleared it up.

I am facing same flicker issue in ambient mode in fossil gen5. Tried the same in gen4 and ticwatch 2. Both showed similar issue. Seems like refresh rate is too low in ambient mode for these watches. If there is no color in the ambient mode, the flicker is not there. Can watchmaker add a feature to override ambient mode refresh rate?
